Photo of the Month - Black Church of Hvalsnes

Photo of the Month

This image was taken by Ted Thelin in Hvalsnes, Iceland on July 20th, 2014. It won a Yellow Ribbon in the recent 2015 FCCC 2nd Triannual Digital Competition - Class A Color.

It was taken with a Nikon D4, with a Nikon 14-24 mm f 2.8 lens at a focal length of 20mm. The camera settings were 1/125 sec. at f/16 with ISO 100, -1 EV, aperture priority, matrix metering.

Ted's comments follow: This photo was taken in a remote area on a trip to Iceland. Evidently the churches are often privately owned and therefore not always in town. Our group of eight saw no one in the time we spent in the area (about two hours). It was taken around noon, but thankfully is was overcast so the light was OK. Processed in ACR then Viveza and Color Efex Pro. We were unable to get inside. What attracted my eye was the fact that the church was black with the forboding sky and the little bit of blue sky around the church. The simple black crosses make a good foreground and the stone walls take the eye to the church. I spent a lot of my attention adjusting my tripod at the correct height to show the leading lines while avoiding as much merger of objects as possible.
